Guest Post

Making a playlist for my books is part of my writing process. I start adding songs to the list sometimes before I know the title or little more than the plot. I continue to curate the list of music throughout the writing process--adding and removing songs as the content shifts and evolves--before doing a final run-through in the days leading up to the book launch.

It's one of my favorite traditions.

So now that First & Goal, book one in the Queen of the League series, has been out for a week, I figured it was high time to share the soundtrack.

This playlist includes a somewhat eclectic mix of songs. Of course there are more than a few Bon Jovi songs (that will make sense if you've read the book) along with songs that just seem to fit.

For example, "Just One of the Guys" by Jenny Lewis seemed perfect, because Harper Duquaine is trying (but not always succeeding) to be one of the guys. "Classic" by MKTO and "Turn Down for What" by DJ Snake and Lil Jon are just really good pump up songs for setting a playlist. (Trust me, I've done the research.)

I added "Fight Song" by Rachel Platten, because it seemed like a great anthem for Harper as she undergoes her quest to dominate a fantasy football league.

In creating this list, I was very much aware that there were three more books to come in this series. As the rest of the books come out, and I share their respective playlists, you'll notice a few of these artists making frequent appearances on the list, though with different songs. Because I use these playlists as motivation and inspiration while I write, I wanted each one to have a similar tone and feel while having a different theme--just like the books.

You can listen to the full playlist on Spotify.

About the Book

When Harper Duquaine’s no-nonsense approach to work unintentionally ruffles the wrong feathers at her new job, she joins her co-workers’ fantasy football league to prove she can hang with the guys. Only problem: she doesn’t know a sleeper from a keeper (or any of the other lingo thrown her way).

Embroiled in a world of lineups, stats, and trades, Harper’s quest to make nice topples when her competitive streak emerges. And her promise to herself that she’ll be a strong, independent woman and leave the drama and heartache behind is seriously tested when she catches the attention of her two biggest competitors: J.J., a local celebrity determined to win a fantasy championship, and Brook, the mild-mannered coach who seems too good to be true. Both threaten her resolve to remain single… and, more importantly, her chances at winning the prize pool.

With a slew of conflicting advice in her real and fantasy worlds, Harper must figure out how to play the game and come out a winner.
